Amazon FBA Fees Explained 2026 (Including the April Fuel Surcharge)
Amazon FBA fees have four layers, and most sellers calculate only two. The April 2026 fuel surcharge added a fifth wrinkle that many fee calculators have not updated for. Here is the complete current picture.
1. Referral fee (8-15% by category)
Amazon's commission on every sale, charged as a percentage of the total sale price including shipping. Most categories are 15%. Notable exceptions: Electronics and Computers are 8%, Automotive is 12%, Jewelry is 20%. Clothing is tiered: 5% under $15, 10% at $15-20, 17% over $20. Getting the category tier wrong can halve your margin.
2. FBA fulfillment fee (now with fuel surcharge)
Charged per unit when Amazon picks, packs, and ships. Determined by size tier and weight. A 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge was added April 17, 2026, on top of all fulfillment fees in the US and Canada, averaging about $0.17 per unit on standard items.
| Size tier | Weight | Fee with surcharge |
|---|---|---|
| Small Standard | ≤6 oz | $3.17-$3.35 |
| Large Standard | 1-2 lb | $4.71-$5.71 |
| Large Standard | 2-3 lb | $6.08-$6.85 |
3. Storage fees (the Q4 trap)
Charged monthly per cubic foot. Off-peak (January-September) is $0.75/cu ft. Q4 (October-December) jumps to $2.25/cu ft, three times higher. Aged inventory surcharges begin at 181 days. A seller with 500 cubic feet of holiday inventory pays $1,125/month in Q4 versus $375 off-peak.
4. Inbound placement fee (avoidable)
Charged when you send all inventory to one fulfillment center and Amazon redistributes it. Ranges from $0.14 to $1.90 per unit for standard items. Fully avoidable by shipping to 4+ fulfillment centers, using Amazon Warehousing and Distribution, or splitting shipments.
The real cost picture
On a $30 Home & Kitchen product (15% category, 1.5 lb): referral fee $4.50 + fulfillment fee $5.71 with surcharge = $10.21 in Amazon fees, about 34% of revenue before you account for product cost, shipping to Amazon, storage, or advertising. Most sellers also spend 15-30% of revenue on PPC ads. This is why accurate fee calculation before sourcing a product is essential.
